Geography Lesson

It's sure an awful feeling
To be happy and content
But still so depressed
You're having trouble eating
Turns out that my Waterloo
Is ample free time
On Saturday afternoon
In which I could finish
My household chores
If I could just get myself
Out of a bed that's higher than Everest
Plagued with my heart of a defeatist

Well the storm blew down the chicken house
Even though there hadn’t been chickens in it for a couple years
But I guess once a chicken house always a chicken house
Until there’s just a patch of dirt that once was a chicken house
And the storm blew down all the pine trees
That had once made up the property boundary
All the pine trees got blown down all over town
There’s not a single loblolly left around
And the storm blew down my bad memories
Until that was all left inside me
Now all I can do is wait for the next storm to blow through
And hopefully I’ll get swept away too

And if I had
A big brass bed
Lady would you come lay
Can't you see
Just you and me
And whatever we wanna do
And if I had
A big brass bed
Lady would you come stay
Maybe we could fill the sheets
And see just what we're coming to

Water Cycle
02:08
|
|||
As I walk through the park
I chew ice from a styrofoam cup
And I think of all the places
That ice could have come from
I could be eating the iceberg that sunk the Titantic
Or water flooding the Estonia out in the Baltic
Or maybe water from the hull of the Mary Celeste
Abandoned in the Atlantic
I conclude it's best to let the cycle continue
And toss the half-full cup of ice toward a trashcan
Where the styrofoam turns to shrapnel
As it smashes into the outside
And the ice spreads onto the dirt
A found lost treasure of diamonds and pearls

Speaking Ill of the Dead
01:23
|
|||
When you’re right you’re right and I’m right all the time
Especially when I don’t have to talk to anyone else about it
And maybe I’ve said a few things in jest
Which probably should have waited until after a good night’s rest
But I think it’s too late now to worry about
And I’m sure you agree in fact I’ll assume
Now this silent pause has gone on for so long
Drops of sweat from my nose have become a navigable pond

Fresh outta bread and eggs
I'm buying beer and cigarettes
I'm going through your line again
You give me that look you always do
I'm in love with the grocery store clerk
I took you out on a date
It went good but not great
No kiss when I dropped you off
But still just as sweet when off the clock
I'm in love with the grocery store clerk
Stopped in on my grocery day
They said you quit cause you moved away
You didn’t mention it on that date
Unless that’s what you meant by “my flight's delayed”

Ohio by CSNY
01:42
|
|||
I was at a redlight
And a car pulled up next to me
Blaring “Ohio” by CSNY
Then the light turned green
And they beat me off the line
And the back of the car
Windshield down to bumper
Was covered with blue lives matter stickers
And American flag Punisher decals
And I know they don’t see it
Four dead in Ohio

I’m a bit infatuated
With a drink that is carbonated
I got your ice cold frostie
Makes your lips go flippity-flop
Sounds like a horse walking clippity-clop
I got your ice cold frostie
You’ve got a pang in your sweet tooth
Got all you need under my roof
I got your ice cold frostie
Laying in bed, throwing ‘em back
I hope it gives me a heart attack
I got your ice cold frostie

Rhododendron Blues
03:43
|
|||
The flowers by the front window
Outside have died
My whole yard has turned
Into shades of beige
And it feels just like
My bank account
That’s what zero means
There’s nothing green
Here’s a bouquet
For better days
I tripped down the porch steps
But I didn’t get hurt
Nothing to catch my fall
Gravel like goose eggs
The rain will come tomorrow
But the season has passed
Even though the weather is warm
This can last for long

Chickadee/Pessimist
01:26
|
|||
I never knew the ubiquity
Of the Carolina chickadee
Until I knew their name
And I never knew I could be happy
Until I quit drinking
Every fucking day
And there’s never been a better friend
Within four walls at the bar
If all our friends are talented
Ain’t the sum of the parts just talentless
I don’t mean to be bitter
But they sold-out of cowboy boots a the secondhand store
