Ode to Born Under Punches

from Refracted Focus by Prahnas

/

lyrics

One time in Memphis, Tennessee
Two miles east of the Mississippi River
I was talking about “Born Under Punches”
The opening track on Talking Heads’ “Remain in Light”
Smoking out on a fourth floor fire escape
Always fearing a big earthquake
I’m afraid the New Madrid fault will wake
Anytime I’m in Memphis, Tennessee
But anyway I said I’d marry
The next person who felt the same about Born Under Punches as me

So I went back inside and someone put on “Remain in Light”
And the sixty year-old woman who lived there said
“I lived in New York City when this album came out and I went to a party with a bunch of Italians but I don’t speak Italian
But they all starting dancing with their arms spread and I followed their lead
And even though we couldn’t talk to each other
We were in complete unison dancing together to that song”

So my friend asked if I’d found the one
(And the heat goes on)
And I said hey let’s not jump the gun
(And the heat goes on)
I’ve only known this woman for an afternoon
(And the heat goes on)
But I must give her credit where credit is due
(And the heat goes on)
We have connections to the song born under punches
(And the heat goes on)
But maybe that’s no caliber for love
(And the heat goes on)
And then we laughed it up and got in the van to head back to Arkansas
(And the heat goes on)
As we crossed the Mississippi River my knuckles were white
But we made it over that I-40 bridge just fine
